Bentong Food - What To Eat and What Not in Bentong Pahang

Bentong town in Pahang is a very popular stop for travelers to the east coast. This is the town where many people will make a pit-stop before continuing their journey. There have been many blog site featuring Bentong Food, so on one our latest food trail to Sungai Lembing and Kuantan for a short break, we decided to try out some of these recommended food places.

We started very early in the morning so that we can reach Bentong by 8am to have our breakfast in Bentong town which is famed for its Wantan Noodle.

As we arrive at the Kedai Kopi Yuen Kee which is next to the Bentong morning market; it was already very pack; we started looking for a seating place at the coffee shop. It looks like every table is waiting for this Wanton Noodles. We were hoping for a real treat.

Upon our order of the dry wanton noodles, we also decided to order the Yong Tau Foo like every table does as the waiting time is about 45 min to 1 hour for the wanton noodle.

The verdict of the Yong Tau Foo was not bad, we like the Tau Foo Pok, as the texture was quite soft and smooth compared with those from KL which has a firmer texture.

we also order the others "Liew" like the Bitter Gourd, Brinjal and Fried bean curd which the verdict is passable.

Next, we tried their Chee Cheong Fun from the same store, but the sauce fails miserably and it has a taste that we are not really accustomed to.

Our order of the Wantan noodles came soon after we finish our Yong Tau Foo. There were very little pieces of thin slices of Char Siew and taste wise there are nowhere frankly speaking is nowhere comparable with any of the KL wanton noodle seller.

The dry wanton noodle which was ordered was just drenched in black thick soya sauce and no other taste. We were really disappointed after all the hype and waiting for this must eat in Bentong. The only saving grace was the Yong Tau Foo in this Kedai Kopi Yuen Kee.

We then left to go to the KOW PO ice cream shop which has been in business for more than 40 years. As it was 930am, the shop is not opened yet as can be seen in our photo, but after some chat with Mr. Kow, he obliged to sell us some of his ice-cream for us to taste as we told him, we are from KL and on the way to Kuantan and won't be coming back.

The Ice cream is made fresh and has many flavors to choose from. We tried out the peanuts flavoured ice cream (RM3.50 per scoop).

and the chocolate flavours which was really chocolatey and has a very smooth soft texture. We left Bentong after our ice-cream stop and continue our food journey to Sungai Lembing, Kuantan. More of this in our other post below.

Kuantan Food: Ramin By The River Restaurant Mega View Hotel Kuantan Food Promotion

Kuantan Megaview Hotel Ramin By The River

We did not anticipate that our short holiday to Kuantan coincide with the Hari Raya Haji which means most of the popular Kuantan Malay food store are closed for this holiday season. So, we end up exploring on other Kuantan food to eat.

Kuantan Megaview Hotel Ramin By The River Dining Area

As we were staying at the Mega View Hotel Kuantan, we decided to check out a special ala carte set lunch and dinner promotion at Ramin By The River Restaurant that was ongoing.

Kuantan Megaview Hotel Ramin By The River Dining Area

The restaurant is nicely set up with a garden wedding decor theme much like a wedding reception setup. The other nice feel about dining at the Ramin By The River Restaurant is the spectacular river view, especially in the evening.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Tom Yum

Since there were 6 of us which are heavy eaters; we decided to order the 7 dishes set which the first is the Clear TomYam Seafood Soup. For me, the soup was a little sourish slurping up directly but eaten with rice, is much better.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Crispy Fried Chicken

Next dish is the Fried Crispy Chicken. The chicken is fried to a crisp and was served with a Thai dipping sauce at the sides.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Crispy Nyonya Steam Fish

Followed by the Steam fish in Nyonya Sauce. The Nyonya sauce was quite nicely done and was best eaten with white rice. The Siakap fish was very fresh and the meat texture was firm without any smelly taste normally associated with this type of fish.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Crispy Assam Sotong

After that, we had the Assam Sotong; which has a strong Assam sambal flavoured. With the bouncy and firm texture of the fresh squid, it was another dish which we had to order our add-on rice to goes with the Assam sauce.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Crispy Planta Prawn

Our order of the prawns is the Crispy Planta Prawn. The prawns were fried to a crisp texture and cooked with the Planta sauce. This is very much a change from the standard butter prawns; a first for us to try this method of cooking the prawns.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Fried Eggs With Prawn

To complement our other spicy dishes we ordered the Fried Eggs With Prawns.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River King of Vegetables

For vegetables; we had the King of Vegetables with Belacan. Love this as we can really taste the strong flavoured of the Kuantan belacan evidently in this dish.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Rojak Buah

The set dinner also comes with a complimentary Rojak Buah. This Rojak Buah is made from the family owned secret sauce. We were a little delighted to taste this Rojak as our normal expectation are not too high for Rojak Buah that are usually served at hotels. Apparently, the specialty is the dry shrimp that was used to make the sauce.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Fruit Platter

and a complimentary Fruit Platter for dessert to end our meals.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Menu
This set cost RM258.00 ++. To us from KL, it is a real value for money deal. We were quite surprised that hotel food can be this good in Kuantan at Ramin By The River Restaurant and the service was rather quick.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Pokemon Pikachu Burger

The next day, before heading back to Kuala Lumpur, we decided to try out a special dish which is Pokemon Burger (RM13.90) that was on offered by Ramin By The River Restaurant which looks very cute and enticing. It turns out that the burger patties was made with a rendang inspired sauce. It would have been better if the Chef uses a teriyaki based patties instead which will taste better to us.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Mee Mamak

Next, we tried out Ramin By The River Restaurant - 2 signature ala-carte dishes which the first is the Mee Mamak (RM13.90). Laden with seafood like prawns & cuttlefish, bean curd and potatoes it was cooked with the right sauce combination that was very flavourful.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Nasi Goreng

and the second one is the Nasi Goreng Kampung (RM16.90). We like the sambal belacan that came with it; as it has that special pungent taste. The spicy fried rice is served with a piece of Fried Chicken, Eggs, Salted Fish, Acar, Kacang, Ikan Bilis and the special sambal sotong.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Pei Pa Chicken

We were told that the Chef has also 2 special dish which was not on the menu; the first is the Pei Pa Chicken. The skin was roasted to a nice soft crisp and bedded with a special Pei Pa sauce which was perfect eaten with white rice.

Kuantan Mega View Hotel Ramin By The River Vienna Prawns

and the second dish is the Vienna Prawns. The prawns are set on skewers and fried to a deep crisp before being topped with a special sauce. A nice meal; as a snack instead.

We vouch; to make our next Kuantan food trail seeking out some of Kuantan delicious food on our next visit to Kuantan in the distant future.

Fortuna Palace Seafood Restaurant Kajang - Specialty Chinese Dishes and Seafood

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang Address

Kajang is famous for its satay offering and most people that go to Kajang usually flock to those Satay stalls. But this time around we are not going for its' Satay but instead to try out a popular Chinese restaurant which is the Fortuna Palace Seafood Restaurant Kajang located at 17-20, Jalan KP 1/2, Taman Kajang Prima, 43000 Kajang, Selangor, Malaysia, a Chinese Restaurant that started way back in 2001 which offers wedding banquet and authentic Chinese and seafood dishes in Kajang.

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang Dining Area

Fortuna Palace Seafood Restaurant Kajang has recently renovated its restaurant to offers a better dining experience and ambiance that befit the growing demand and upmarket offering for Chinese and Seafood cuisine in Kajang.

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang Dining Area

With the refurbished setup, the Chef has also come out with a few new dishes to entice its customers taste buds as the preferred choice for Chinese Food and wedding banquet in Kajang.

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang VIP Room

For more privacy dining, Fortuna Palace Seafood Restaurant Kajang also offers its customer with 10 private room dining with karaoke facilities; each of these rooms is named after the popular Chinese Dynasty. Some of the rooms can be combined to hold mini private banquet of up to 60 pax. The ground floor hall can accommodate up to 40 tables while its first floor up to 60 tables.

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang Padi Fried Crab Rice

Our review started off with the restaurant signature dish which is the Padi Fried Crab Rice RM48.00 (Medium) and RM68.00 (Big). The rice is first fried with Pandan Leaf, Lemon Grass, and Eggs before setting into the lotus leaf and sent to the steamer. It is then topped with two type of crab meat i.e flower and mud crab meat. This method of cooking makes the rice very fluffy and flavourful. We like the fact that the crab meat is extracted out to make eating this crab dish a breeze; especially those that loves crab but does not like the process of getting to the crab meat.

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang Marmite Dong Bo Meat

This is then followed by the Marmite Dong Bo Meat (RM28.00). The pork belly is first fried and then braised with a special sauce to soften the texture especially the fat layer of the belly. When the orders are made, it is then cut to the right portion and is then coated with a marmite sauce that caramelized into the pork belly meat. The result, tender meat with a distinct marmite aroma and taste. Wonderful with a bowl of white rice. This Dong Bo meat is best paired with Red Wine.

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang Sweet And Sour Fish

Another signature dish of the Fortuna Palace Seafood Restaurant Kajang is the Sweet and Sour Tilapia (RM4.00 per 100gm). The notable difference is the presentation of this dish. Normally for other restaurants, the chef will deep fry the whole fish and served with the sauce but here, the chef, has sliced out all the fish meat and deep fried it separately, this makes for a great presentation and is very easy to eat. The other plus points are that the sauce is set on the base which is good for those that would enjoy the crunchiness of the fried fish meat.

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang 2 Varieties Tau Foo

The next dish is the 2 Varieties BeanCurd (RM20.00). The first bean curd has a Japanese influence; in that, it uses the Japanese Egg Taufoo which is mixed with minced fish paste and mushroom. It is moulded before being steamed and fried to a crisp, giving a texture of crispy outside but soft on the inside. The other style has the fried beancurd with a Thai style sauce that gives a refreshing sourish and tangy taste.

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang Fried Lobster with Curry Powder

The last signature dish is the Fried Lobster with Curry Powder (RM23.80 per 100 gm). These Boston lobster are not the frozen type; you can see them swimming in the aquarium on the ground floor. It is as fresh as you can get. The Lobster are first lightly fried to give it a more reddish hue and then cooked in a special flavourful curry concoction. The firm texture of the lobster is infused with buttery curry taste and an aromatic broth, such that it melts in the mouth and leave a satisfied savoury aftertaste.

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang Deluxe Mixed Vegetables

The new dishes which will be featured in the standard menu is the Deluxe Mixed Vegetables. Using fresh Wai San (Burdock) which is rich in iron was indeed a surprise to us as normally Wai San is favoured as an ingredient for soup. Stir fried with a combination of fresh diced prawn meat, peanuts, and kale; we find it a nice combination with the different texture that gives our taste bud an experience of the real taste of its' original ingredients.

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang Vietnamese Style Prawn Cracker

The last dish is the Vietnamese Style Prawn Cracker. Inspired with the Japanese Tempura; 3 giant prawns are first sliced in the middle and then layered with a thin layer of seasoned batter and sent for deep frying. The result is a nice crunchy texture with the succulent prawn meat in every bite. It is like the Cucur Udang but with giant prawns. Although the look of this dish is simple, the taste was extremely delicious.

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang Private Room

Overall the dishes serves at Fortuna Palace Seafood Restaurant Kajang scored top marks in terms of presentation, taste and prices. The Chef at the restaurant takes great pains to ensure that each dishes are presented to make eating it a simple affair without much fuss.

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang Wine Collection

As the current trend is for one to enjoy their meal with wine; Fortuna Palace Seafood Restaurant Kajang also offers a wine selection which is hand-picked by the restaurant owner that you can choose from to be paired with your dishes.

Fortuna Seafood Restaurant Kajang Fresh Juice Bar

But for those healthy fans; Fortuna Palace Seafood Restaurant Kajang also has their own Juice Bar that serves freshly squeezed juices.
